Boston Draft Riot occurs.
July 14, 1863
Three days after a similar riot occurs in New York City, thousands of rioters seeking draft records and weapons attack the Cooper Street Armory. The rioters, most of them Irish immigrants, were prompted to protest the recently-enacted draft law after a woman was presented a draft notice for her husband outside their home at 146 Prince Street. The militia, under the command of Stephen Cabot, attempt to restore order, with support from a group of Harvard alumni, who had been holding a reunion at the Parker House. But several members of the garrison are killed, and at least eight rioters, including a 12-year-old boy.
